Now that the job search is over, I’ll no longer have absolute free time on Fridays. Even today, I’m rushing to finish this before I need to go out to make last-minute errands. I’ll try to stay on top of this if possible, but I’m not exactly a morning person so we’ll have to see. Perhaps this will evolve into something similar instead.
The piece that struck me the most this week was this New Yorker blog post about how the Oak Creek Sikh temple shooting has not been seen as an All-American tragedy. It embodies everything I’ve been thinking since the shooting occurred, and it reveals an unsightly side of our society. http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2012/08/an-american-tragedy.html
Also unsightly: the arrest of the jet skier who broke into JFK airport after being stranded by a broken jet ski. This guy was trying to save himself, what did you want him to do? Say, oh, it’s an airport, I’ll just go swim another 20 miles to find help elsewhere? The people who designed or implemented the failed $100 million security system should be the ones arrested. http://abcnews.go.com/US/jet-skier-breaks-jfk-airports-100-million-security/story?id=16992190#.UC2_dt2PVXs
And it’s not just the Terrible Twos: how loud, persistent snoring from toddlers could be the cause of bad behavior now and in the future. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Sleep/loud-persistent-snoring-toddlers-affect-behavior/story?id=16978474#.UC3ALt2PVXs
And here’s this week’s (pretty much mandatory) journalism-related story. The staff of University of Georgia’s student newspaper quits after a non-student editor is imposed on them. http://jimromenesko.com/2012/08/16/university-of-georgia-newspaper-staff-resigns-after-non-student-named-editor/
I hope this last story brings as many smiles to you as it did to me. Five siblings got married on the same day in a mega wedding in Arizona, http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/08/five-arizona-siblings-marry-same-day-in-mega-wedding/ and here are the beautiful photos of the group and individual couples. http://waldie.christopherleighstudios.com/#/our-photos/ My best wishes to all the newlyweds!
